TANK Simulator cutaway render showing the BTR-80-inspired cabin, immersive interior and motion platform
TANK Simulator — Full-scale simulation experience

Overview

Built from the visual and spatial language of the BTR-80, TANK Simulator translates an armoured vehicle into a physical training environment. The experience brings together product design, immersive display systems and full-scale fabrication.

Project Direction

The existing BTR-80 was reinterpreted as a simulator through a focused sequence of research, digital development and full-scale prototyping.

Research into BTR-80 blueprints, materials, form and military student users
Vehicle and user research

Research

The original vehicle's drawings, proportions, construction and material logic were studied in detail. The simulator was shaped around military students while preserving the recognisable character of the BTR-80.

Product Development

The BTR-80 was digitally modelled and selectively rescaled to improve transport, access and human ergonomics without losing its defining silhouette.

Cabin, immersive interior and motion system

Motion System

A six-degree-of-freedom robotic arm beneath the cabin creates realistic movement. A bellows conceals the mechanism, keeping the platform visually calm and easier for users to understand.

Immersive Interior

Two 34-inch curved displays and one 32-inch curved display replace the front glazing to create a continuous immersive view. The control console draws from real armoured vehicles while incorporating the functions required by the simulation.

Structure

A welded metal-profile frame provides the structural core needed for repeated movement and use.

Composite Body

The frame was enclosed with polyester and fibre-composite panels, balancing durability with a controlled overall weight.
